How to Replace an audi tt key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check replacement key for audi a4 evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and audi lost Key the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. The good news is they are very cheap and easy to find particularly if you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's a vital component of the audi a1 key fob's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is the same across the audi lost key 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
