3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheel buggy is great for off-roading and provides the most comfortable ride for your baby. They are also more convenient to maneuver and push than a four-wheeler, particularly those with fabric sling seats or seat units that are positioned comfortably in the frame, delivering the best ergonomics and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled vehicles are very stable, and this makes them an ideal option for off-roading (especially when equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They often feature oversized front wheels, which cope well with bumps and kerbs as well as rough ground. Some even come with a lockable front wheel to provide extra stability on uneven terrain.

It's worth bearing in mind that 3 wheel running stroller-wheel buggies have a lower center of gravity than models with four wheels which means that they fall over more easily. The best 3-wheeled pushchairs are made with the best 3 wheel stroller with car seat geometry to ensure they remain solid in all conditions. They should be able turn at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand. They also feature an incline of 360o for the front wheel that is ideal for maneuvering over difficult terrain.

For really tricky surfaces, look out for models with air-filled tyres also known as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to handle roads that are not paved and can deal with mud, gravel, rock etc. A lot of all-terrain buggies have an swivelling wheel on the front that can be locked for greater stability when dealing with rough terrain.

A 3-wheel stroller is an ideal option for runners and those who like to walk fast and uphill, especially when you plan to attach a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is an excellent example. It features an incline-reclining seat that is flat, with a 5-point harness, and plenty of storage space to keep all your equipment (plus a 50+ extendable sun hood). It's lightweight, compact, and suitable for use starting at birth. It can be used in conjunction with a car seat or carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging, however, it isn't designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you are looking for a buggy to take on difficult terrain, you should pick one with large tires. They are designed to tackle grass, cobbles and dirt tracks with ease while providing a smooth ride. They're also good for jogging because they're equipped with suspension and are easy to climb and descend kerbs. However, the downside is that they are quite heavy to push.

The best 3 wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). This 3 wheel tandem stroller (they said)-wheeler has 16 rear wheels, and a lockable swivel front wheel, so it's very manoeuvrable. It comes with tyres filled with air which require pumping up from time to time. It can carry children as young as the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler was awed by the shape of the seat, and she found steering it easy even with her three-year-old riding along.

Another option that is great is the Baby Jogger Versa GT, that comes with an adjustable handlebar and a hood made of high-quality with 50+ UV protection. It is also easy to move kerbs up and down and fits in a the boot of a car that is small. It can also be used as a stroller along with an infant carrycot or toddlers.

Fabric slings are placed inside the frame and not on top as modular seats. This design has an lower centre of gravity that is at the ideal height, making it easier to push and lighter to kerb pop (you should never think about how often you'll do this when you're a new parent!)

Seating

There are a myriad of options for seating in three wheelers. For newborns, there is the option to use the carrycot and (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cosy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used on and off the buggy), while older babies and toddlers can use the parent-facing or world-facing seat that is spacious and padded and does have adjustable ventilation. It is important to note that the seats do not recline completely however, they can be adjusted to the lowest position which will give your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A sling made of fabric is also available. It's a benefit that it is positioned inside the frame instead of on top as a modular seat. This results in a lower centre of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it much easier and lighter to push, particularly over bumpy terrains or curbs and MFM reviewer Kath really liked the way this kind of seat negotiated these challenges.

She also noted that the grippy tyres make it easy to navigate cobbles and kerbs.

These tyres are sometimes tricky to keep inflated and must be filled regularly. They are also more prone to punctures than foam tyres so you'll need to make sure that you have a repair kit along with a spare inner tube and pump handy when out and about with your buggy.

PU tyres can be seen on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres, but they're just as robust. PU tires are easily distinguished by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide well on uneven and tied surfaces.

If you move your hand over the tyres, you can tell if they are PU or rubber. If it feels like it's moving, then it is a PU. You can also test whether your buggy is equipped with PU tyres, by sliding them onto flat, clean surfaces. They should roll easily and fit snugly into wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are able to withstand the rough terrain associated with high-performance buggies. The downside of this is that the foam could compress and make your buggy feel less stable as it loses its springy nature. You'll also find that these types of tyres can typically be noisy because they create a lot of noise as you turn and navigate your way around the town.
