10 Things We Hate About Upvc Door Handles
Types of UPVC Door Handles
If your upvc door handle requires replacement, it is essential to find the best replacement for your home. A locksmith can supply and install high-security uPVC handles with extra security features.
The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Make sure to check these measurements to ensure the new uPVC handle will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rod that pivots around an object. When you apply force to the end of the bar, the fulcrum will tend to rotate in the direction that the force is applied. This rotates the force and lets you lift or move things that normally require more force to lift.
The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point at which you apply force determines the most effective movement. This is referred to as the mechanical advantage. The more the lever is extended more, the greater the mechanical advantage. You can determine the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum until the point at which you're applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and where you will end the lever.
Levers can produce different effects based on how forces are applied. For example a lever of class 2 tends to rotate in the opposite direction as the force applied to it (like a totter-totter). If you press on the door handle the force will create similar rotational effects to this.
However, levers don't create energy. Levers increase the force by changing small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into greater amounts of force that are applied over shorter distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and transport massive amounts of cargo. The lever principle is also employed in everyday tools such as crowbars. hammer claws fishing rods, hammer claws and even your own legs when you are standing on your car's hand brake.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles are a kind of door handle made from UPVC that has levers on both sides that operate the multipoint lock. They come in a variety of designs and finishes and are suitable for a range of materials including upvc handle window, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold as a pair for the outer and inner door, with screws and spindles included. They are available in unhanded and handed versions to suit different users.
They are commonly used in new constructions and can be fitted to replace existing doors made of upvc. The levers are raised to open all the multipoint locks and the key is turned to close or unlock the door. They offer a little more security than the standard lever handles for doors, as the locking can only be performed by the inside using a key.
They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt but are an affordable alternative for a home with more security. The only downside is that they don't offer the same level of protection like a cylinder bolt and therefore won't prevent access from outside when the door is left open.
The majority of lever pad upvc door handles that we stock are made by the industry's leading manufacturers and therefore are constructed using high quality components. They are also typically supplied with a manufacturers guarantee.
Typically, they will be designed to be compatible with a 92mm lock, or the replacement version called a Paddock lock. They will feature a cylinder with 82mm diameter on the inside, and 62mm on the outside. They also come with two spindle followers. Some are fitted with the back plate whilst others can be removed to enable different fixing centres.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches are the simplest type of door handles. Pressing down on the lever is a simple mechanism that opens inside the conservatory door handles to keep it closed. It can also be locked using keys. Some lever privacy handles operate in the same way but with the addition of a snib (like a doorknob).
A snib button is very beneficial, especially for homes where it's crucial to maintain privacy or security. If your partner is arriving home late from work, you can utilize the snib to ensure they aren't allowed in until they're ready in. This type handle can also be used on doors inside, such as those in bedrooms where you want to restrict outside access.
In some instances there are instances where snib buttons could cause issues, especially in the case of doors and locks that are bent. If the snib button is used accidentally or by someone who isn't accustomed to it, the door can slam shut and lock you out. Most of the time, you can get in by knocking on the door frame or letterbox, but this isn't ideal.
If your uPVC has an snib, we suggest replacing it with an electronic lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. These smart locks can be retrofitted onto double glazing windows handles turn pull handle kits. They come with coverplates that hide holes that are already present to make it an effortless installation. The E-LOK app can be used to unlock doors using RFID cards or a mechanical key. Passcodes are also available for security and convenience. The system is tested to 200k cycles to ensure durability. The handles are made from solid metal and meet BS EN 1670 Grade 5 for corrosion resistance.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This popular handle style is commonly used on front doors. It is advantageous because it has the benefit of preventing the door being opened without a key from the outside if the lock has not been deadlocked. This is accomplished through an external 'pad' handle that locks into the gap between the handles and the lock case to prevent the latch from being removed or the door being opened.
This type of handle is designed to fit uPVC doors with multipoint locks that operate with split spindle operations. This kind of operation requires the internal lever handle as well as the external pad handle to be fitted to the same lock case. This can be a simple modification to the existing uPVC handles but it may also involve changing the lock case or even a new set of handle furniture to allow this additional function.
