Three Wheeled Buggies

If you're looking for a buggy to run with or just a compact stroller for the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies are great for mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.

If you're looking for an easy ride in your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. However, they are susceptible to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with a repair kit.

Sturdy frame

Figures have just been released that show that the three-wheeled buggy which was a symbol of the decade of more money than wisdom - is in steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers that can handle a wider range of terrain, yet still look stylish and easy to push.

The basic principle is that the larger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear, make it easier to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or in difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on the newborn baby and a toddler and found it to be extremely robust. It was able to handle grass, cobbles and rough pavements, as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it feels sturdy to push and very solid when traversing difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require periodic pumping) offer built-in suspension which was extremely comfortable for my kids.

The shape and size of the seat is another thing to think about. You want the seat to be large enough for your child to be at ease and to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer a full lie-flat option while others will only allow an adult facing one.

An excellent option for taking on off-road and muddy trails is the Roma Atlas. This buggy is ideal for a single child as early as birth and can be adjusted to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers until age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and a spacious padded seat unit. The storage options are excellent too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets on the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the back of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels mean your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - ideal for buggies designed for off-road use. They also allow you to maneuver the buggy through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies (more information) have the front wheels that swivel to help you navigate around tight corners, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be pushed. This also helps when you crash into a tree root or stray road, as the front wheel can be lifted up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air filled tyres which means they can be used on a variety of terrains and are much more flexible than 4-wheeler. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you'll require an repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo Lux are some of our favourite 3 wheel all terrain pushchair-wheelers. These buggies, according to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which according to her "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles", and can easily climb or descend kerbs. The buggies also have suspensions that, according to Kath "smooths out bumps very effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels may be quite wide, and they may be a challenge to fit in tight spaces. This is an issue when you're using it for a jogger or to be able to get through doors that are narrow when out and about. Luckily, most models have small folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to make compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it's much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to maneuver, making them perfect for challenging terrain such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her infant and toddler and said: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground and the swivel front wheel being particularly helpful. I was also impressed with how well it dealt with kerbs, especially when using the brake operated by hand. It was very stable going downhill or on a rough terrain."

The only drawback of this amazing mobility is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it will struggle in tight spaces, something to keep in mind especially if you live in a urban area. If this is the case, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better option for you.
