Three Wheeled Buggies

Whether you're looking for a buggy to run around in or a compact stroller for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies provide great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre even in tight areas.

For a smooth ride, go for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are susceptible, however to punctures. Make sure you have a repair set.

Sturdy frame

New data show that three-wheeled buggies, that emblem of the noughties, which were more expensive than common sense, are in rapid decline. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive while still looking fashionable.

The larger the wheels are, the more your buggy will be able to deal with uneven surfaces and bumpy pavements. With larger wheels front and back makes it much easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found that it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it is solid to push and extremely solid when you're on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped regularly and have a suspension built-in. It was extremely comfortable for my kids.

Another thing to think about is the size and shape. You want the seat to be large enough for your child to feel comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which allows your child to lie flat and face you, whereas others only allow a parent-facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and walking in muddy areas. It can be used as a single unit from the beginning and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat. Storage options are also good, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and a handy pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability while driving over rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for off-road buggies. They also make it easier to move the pushchair around tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have swivel front wheels to help you navigate around corners with ease, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with the speed at which they can be pushed. This can also help when you crash into an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel will lift up to keep you from hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air filled tyres which means they can handle a variety of terrains and are much more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They're also lighter. They are prone to punctures, and you'll need to have a repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo lux are among our favorite 3-wheelers. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which she claims "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles", and can easily move up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".

The drawback of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite wide and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This could be problematic if you intend to are using it as a jogger or have to squeeze through narrow doorways while on the move. Most models come with small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it can be much more maneuverable, especially with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can turn on a dime, and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the terrain and the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also awed by how well it coped with kerbs, especially when using the hand-operated brake. I found it to be extremely steady when I was driving downhill or on uneven ground."

The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy might make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something to be aware of when you live in an urban area. If this is an issue, a 4-wheel buggy might be a better option for you.

Bumper bars can shield your child from scrapes and bumps when they are out and about. They are easy to install, and will allow your child to feel safe and secure out and out and about.

It provides the lower centre of gravity at the right height for your baby and also providing excellent weight distribution for easy kerb pop (it takes less effort to push the buggy over and up a curb than you might think). MFM reviewer Kath said it's great on grass and cobbles. It's also a great option for running thanks to its air-filled tyres and locking swivel wheels.
