Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Discourse Construction Tests

In the field of linguistics the DCT has emerged as one of the most significant tools to analyze learners' behavior in communication. It can be used to analyze various issues, including manner of speaking, turn-taking, and lexical choices. It can be used to determine phonological complexity in learners' speech.

A recent study utilized an DCT to assess EFL students' ability to resist. Participants were given a set of scenarios to choose from, and were then asked to select the most appropriate response. Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked to think about their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. The results of the coding process were compared to the original RI transcripts, which gave an indication of how well the RIs captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.

Refusal Interviews (RIs)

The most important question in pragmatic research is: why do some learners refuse to accept native-speaker norms? Recent research attempted to answer this question with several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants comprised 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. Participants were required to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2 levels. Then they were invited to a RI where they were asked to think about their responses to the DCT situations.

The results showed that, on average, the CLKs disapproved of native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their resistance to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also referred external factors, like relationship advantages. For instance, they discussed how their relationships with professors helped facilitate an easier performance in relation to the linguistic and intercultural norms of their university.

However, the interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures and consequences that they could face if they flouted their local social norms. This will allow them to better understand the effect of different cultural contexts on the classroom behavior and interactions of students from L2.
