French Door Refrigerator With Ice Maker Review

Combining form and functionality, French-door refrigerators have elegant double doors that open to an enormous fridge on top and freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out because of their special features, like door-to-door dispensers and more expensive Ice makers.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right one. They looked at the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is aimed at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchen. The refrigerator is brimming with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a smart water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs a premium, I expect better.

Apart from that minor flaw the fridge is a great option. It features a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French door fridges. It also has a large capacity for frozen food, which is a big difference from other models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on par for an French door refrigerator that costs this much. It also has a decent-sized icemaker packed into the left door, but it's not the largest I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to create a custom storage setup for whatever you have to store. The GE PYE22PYNFS's design for the interior is stylish, too. The LED lighting adds an appealing accent. The storage bins in the door come with a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall objects. The drawers include temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to open and shut however I found the plastic's textured coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your fridge from anywhere in world, and has numerous options for customization. It also sends you notifications when doors are left open, when the fridge or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill, an option available in other GE refrigerators that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to disperse simultaneously. The fridge shows a countdown to show you how much water is left but it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

The top right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more space. There's also a full-width drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

One of the best aspects of this refrigerator is that its ice maker is inside the freezer, making it easy to move ice into the fridge to use as needed. The freezer is designed with thoughtful elements, as well, such as sliding drawers that can help you better organize the position of your items. It also has a huge bin that can hold plenty of frozen food items as well as an additional storage bin for ice.

Its capacity is above average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a bit less than the best counter-depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, which can make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice if you want a French-door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a minimalist design that's not as visually striking as some of the competition however it comes with enough features to make it a good pick. Its most important feature, the adjustable temperature drawer, helps to keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also has a large water dispenser and a decent ice maker that operates quickly.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located above the two crisper bins, is another great feature. This drawer lets you use the majority of the fridge's cooling power into this area, so it can be used to store food items that require special attention. I have found that the general settings work better than the specific ones.

In my tests, the temperatures of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the fridge didn't differ significantly from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't be among the top in our ratings.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of grey-bodied stainless steel which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've seen.
