The slot is the ideal option for wide receivers who are quick, since they can get open more easily when their route won't be covered by a cornerback or linebacker. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a speedy wideout, but could benefit from more slot work. He's a solid target for intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list includes more possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than deep ones such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy will be the Rams main slot receiver this year is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler should be able to perform well in short-to-mid routes, since that's what he excelled at in 2021 while playing for the Bills. Alshon Jeffrey, as an example is the league leader in targets received per game (4.8) However, he's only ranked 6th in slot receiving scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets come from outside and it's difficult to get a first down when playing a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On the other hand, some receivers excel in playing inside and can't do much on the outer. For instance, the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps during the season, and he ran 74% of his slot routes as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more productive Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Moreover it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines up inside on most of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they align inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and often face one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able generate pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore having the best tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). By using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime-type packages, and then deploying him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are also just as good. As a whole, wide receivers with a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns roughly at the same rate as players who play on the edge. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers than to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of them. In fact, he's running a higher number of slot routes than the majority of players on this chart. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position, and makes some big plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this ranking but he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is a perfect player for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who can put up big numbers with both types of targets is a different example. He's among the best in the league when it comes to taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great catcher who is contested.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a key part of his team's defensive line. On the other hand, he's struggled to stop passes from the outside and has been able to give a negative EPA against these types of targets. This is the result of playing with poor linebackers and safeties who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
