The process begins with a polymeric precursor, which is the molecular basis for carbon-rich carbon fibers. In the past, carbon fibers were made from pitch or rayon. Nowadays they are primarily made from polyacrylonitrile, which is produced from the chemical ammonia, a common commodity, and propylene.

Once carbon fiber has been produced, it can be shaped and layered to form composite materials to make various products. By altering the temperature of the material, you can alter its stiffness and strength. For example carbon fibers can be heated to increase its tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It is also machinized to create voids and holes which decrease its tensile strength but increases its modulus of elasticity.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant against oxidation. This protects it from corrosion. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than metal, which means that it is less likely to change its shape due to exposure to heat. Its properties for fatigue are superior to those of metal therefore, carbon fiber will last longer than metal counterparts.

One of the most popular uses of carbon fiber is in the tailplanes and fuselages of aircrafts. The strength and light weight of the material has allowed designers to create aircrafts that are more efficient and safer than before.
