A biopsy is the removal of a small piece of tissue that is examined. This test can determine if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient. For example paracentesis to remove fluid from the abdomen.

The odds of survival are worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and recur. The doctor may suggest an amalgamation of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than merely chemotherapy alone.
