A biopsy involves the removal of just a small portion of affected tissue for testing. This procedure will reveal the stage of mesothelioma as well as if it is epithelioid, biphasic, or sarcomatoid.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and provide curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

The odds of survival are worse when a mesothelioma has advanced. This is because the cancer may become resistant to certain treatments and may recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than merely chemotherapy alone.
