A lot of patients do not report their asbestos exposure and don't seek medical care. When mesothelioma is detected experts may suggest a biopsy for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy involves the removal of a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This test can determine if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and provide an effective treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. The tumors could become resistant to treatment and may recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy on its own.
