The process begins with a polymeric precursor that acts as the molecular backbone of carbon-rich carbon fibers. Historically, the carbon fibers were made of pitch or rayon. Today, the majority are made from polyacrylonitrile. It is derived from the common chemicals ammonia and propylene.

Carbon fiber can be shaped into various composite materials. The stiffness and strength of the material can be controlled by altering the temperature at which it is treated. Carbon fibers are heated to increase their tensile strength or modulus of elastic. It can also be machined to create holes and voids which decrease its tensile strength, but increases its modulus of elasticity.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant against oxidation. This protects it from rust. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than metal, which means it is less likely to change its shape due to exposure to heat. Its properties for fatigue are superior to those of metal so components made from carbon fiber will last longer than their metal counterparts.

Carbon fiber is utilized in the tailplanes and the fuselage of aircraft. The strength and light weight of the material have allowed designers to make aircrafts that are more efficient and safer than before.
