A biopsy is the removal a small piece of tissue that is examined. This procedure can reveal the stage of mesothelioma as well as whether it is epithelioid biphasic or sarcomatoid.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide the best treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The tumors could become resistant to treatment and may recur. The specialist may recommend an amalgamation of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of a patient.
